What is SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your website more appealing to search engine crawlers (Google, Bing, Yahoo etc), therefore moving your site higher up in the organic search results (left side only). SEO involves making the best use of keywords on your website pages and in your blog articles, as well as using some HTML behind the scenes to help search engines identify images and easily read your site.
Keyword Research
The first step in a search engine optimization effort for your site would have to revolve around your keywords and a strategy for placement on the SERPs (search engine results pages). If you are starting a new site or an additional site you have the advantage of choosing your domain name which is an opportunity to make the whole optimization process easier.
First, find and analyze your competition by creating a list of keywords that buyers are likely to enter into a search engine. Go through the results one by one to see how your competition is doing and how they got to the first page. Here is where you will see firsthand how having your favorite keyword in your domain url (Uniform Resource Locator) will help you get found by the search engines.
For instance, say you specialize in closet design. Going on to GoDaddy to do a domain search I find that I can get:
closetdesign.com
theclosetdesign.com
myclosetdesign.com
closetdesignstore.com
closetdesignshop.com
Simply having the term closet in your domain name will get you half way there. To see for yourself enter the term closet design into search engines. You will notice that 8 out of the top 10 results will have closet in the domain name url.
1.www.easyclosets.com/
2. www.closetsbydesign.com/
3.www.closetstogo.com/
4. www.closetorganizersusa.com/
5. www.closetmaid.com/
6. classyclosets.com/
7.www.californiaclosets.com/
8.www.closetfactory.com/
Notice that Page 2 of the SERPs has 5 out of 10 domains with the word closet in the domain name url and page 3 has only 2 domains with closet in the url. There is proof right there that the search engines are being kinder to the companies who have picked a domain name with closet in the url.
There are plenty of free keyword tools to expand your keyword list like:
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Using this tool you can create a list of the most productive keywords for your optimization. Within a minute or two I came up with the following list:
| Keyword | Global Monthly Searches |
| closet design | 40500 |
| closet design ideas | 4400 |
| walk in closet design | 5400 |
| closet design software | 1000 |
| closet design tool | 1000 |
| closet design online | 1600 |
| online closet design | 1600 |
| walkin closet design | 6600 |
| walkin closet design ideas | 1000 |
| closet design tools | 1000 |
Once you have this list perfected, you have the language blueprint for optimizing your site. This is the foundation for building a website that ranks well. Concentrate on creating a list of your best 10 keywords. Take some time with this to get the best keywords. What keywords would you enter to find you? Experiment by putting the terms in the search engines and see who comes up. Are the results a list of your competitors? Or do the results from some of the terms bring up companies outside your niche?
Paid Search
SEOS concentrates on Organic search so your website will come up in organic search results (left side). We would be remiss however if we ignored the Sponsored search results. This is called PPC (pay per click) and it has its place for some websites in certain situations. We can certainly guide you through a PPC campaign with Google Adwords, Yahoo paid search and even PPC on Facebook pages.
We lean toward Organic search results for a few reasons. Firstly Sponsored search is more expensive in the end. Secondly, the quality of leads captured with sponsored search are of lower quality. When I say lower quality I mean that you have less chance of converting that lead to a sale. Average number of pages viewed and time spent on the site are generally lower with PPC. Ask yourself, when was the last time you clicked on a sponsored ad?
Some SEO firms suggest starting with PPC to help the keyword research process before starting Organic SEO. However we have found that with the true labor of thought and our sophisticated keyword research tools, there is no need to even go there. Your website will come up in search engine organic listings on the left side of the SERPs ( search engine results pages).

On-Page Optimization
Now that you have a firm grip on your keywords, it’s time to figure out how your competition got to page one so we can copy them and maybe do it better.
The first step is On-Page Optimization; this is simply putting your keywords in the right places on your web page. Your keywords are put in some places where it is critical and some places where it doesn’t matter at all but we will put them there in case search engines change the rules.
Critical Placement Of Your Keywords:
The most important real estate on your page is at the very top of the page where you want to put your most sought after keywords. These are called your Title tags and the search engines use them to rank your site. For instance for the closet design page your title tags might look like this:
Closet Design | Walk-In Closet Design | Custom Closets
Further down on your page but still above the fold, your best keyword and the one that the page is really all about should be put in what is called a H1 Header Tag. In this case your H1 header tag should obviously be Closet Design. Use only one H1 heading. You can put your secondary keywords in subheadings called H2 Headers and H3 Headers. These subheadings are not limited to one occurrence like the H1 tag but limit the use of these subheaders as too many will dilute the strength of you keywords.
Continue using your keywords from your language blueprint keywords throughout the page wherever they fit comfortably. Write for your readers, not the search engines. Use your keywords sparingly throughout the content you write for this page. Finish the page off with your main keyword in the footer of the page. It’s important to remember that the search engines are essentially text readers so if you put Closet Design in an image, put it in text also or they won’t even know it’s there.
Meta Keyword Tags:
Meta means beyond or outside of. Your favorite keywords should be listed in the meta keyword section of your web page. The search engines used to rank pages according to meta keyword tags but meta keywords are now completely ignored. We are being rigorous by putting them in correctly in case the search engines change their mind again. We want to build a site for the long run so if in the future search engines decide to include them they are there where they should be.
Meta Description Tags:
These are much more important than the meta keywords as they show up in the SERPs (search engine results pages). When your closet design page comes up in the results it will look like this:
Closet Design | Walk-In Closet Design | Custom Closets
Here is where your meta description tags shows up on the SERPs. Make sure it is compelling enough to inspire the searcher to click on the title above it. Make it short and sweet. Best practices call for about 130 to 150 characters. Include a phone number here in case they want to call you immediately.
Just doing these few important items will substantially improve how findable your site is on the web.
On-Page Optimization could be likened to putting the correct information on a catalog card in a library. If any of the information is missing from critical places like the Title tags, the page will be lost in the billions of websites and not in front of your customers.
While this is too far-reaching, to be specific, the umbrella of on-page SEO deals with variables such as:
§ CSS (cascading style sheets) and Gzip compression
§ The site has to be optimized for speed as search engines are using page loading speed as a ranking factor.
§ Site architecture, continuity and Internal links
§ The relevancy of the Title tag, Meta data and Header tags to the primary keyword.
§ How relevant the content in the body area is to the Meta, Internal Links, and other on-page elements.
§ The occurrence of keywords, their proximity to other semantically related keywords and the overall keyword density in a document.

Off-Page Optimization
Off page SEO deals with variables such as:
Inbound links from other websites.
Their volume (appearance).
Velocity (how many links, how fast).
Frequency per keyword anchor text.
Neighborhood (what type of neighborhood the links are from).
Class IP Range (are they from the same block, server or hosting company?)
Backlink Analysis
Its time now to examine the backlinks your competition has linking to their site. This can give us invaluable information telling us who is linking to your competition. Do they have links coming from high PR (page rank) sites or important .org or.edu informational websites? If they do we would want to imitate them to try to build up a good backlinking structure to push your site up in the rankings.
To get started with this, enter “free backlinking analysis software” into a search engine without the quotes. This will present you with several free backlink analysis tools. These tools which come with instruction videos, will tell you where your competition got their all important backlinks that more than anything else, besides the correct On-Page factors, has brought their site into the top 10 results. Again we want to mimic them, hopefully doing it better and thus ranking higher in the SERPs.
Analyze The Competition’s Backlink Profile:
Who is linking to them and what would you have to do to get similar links? These backlinks are very important to the search engines. They reason, correctly, that if these high PR (page rank) or .org and .edu sites are linking to them, they conclude that there is content on the site that is worth linking to and thus making the web page important enough to place well in the SERPs.
Getting the Best Backlinks
The most powerful backlinks you can get are from high PR (page rank) websites from businesses related to your niche. In this case, a link from another closet design company like California Closets would be as good as gold. Of course these kind of links are hard to get so we have a choice of many ways to build your backlink profile. This can be done with article marketing, blogging, social media marketing and a small amount of reciprocal linking.
While you do your backlink analysis, notice who is linking to your competition. They may have a link from an Interior Design firm with a PR6 website. This is very desirable of course but you can get a link from them also. It may be as simple and easy as asking them to link to you. Always ask to be linked to with an anchor text link using your keyword closet design. You can reciprocate with a link to them with Interior Design as the anchor text. This is called reciprocal linking, which was loved by the search engines back in 2005 but has since fallen into disfavor. It’s OK to do this but search engines put less weighting on reciprocal linking than they used to. The best links are one way links coming into your site from anchor text at the very core of your language blueprint.
Your backlink analysis may show that your competition has one way links coming into their site from authority sites. For closet design, a link from Walmart would be a dream come true and put your site on the map in a big way. Since a link from Walmart is probably not achievable, you can get links from local contractors and builders. Most desirable also would be .edu and .org sites as well as professional associations. These links can all bring in a lot of linkjuice because they are like a validation from them. If these authorities are linking to you Google thinks you must be very important to closet design and up you go in the SERPs.
While the percentages of On-Page to Off-Page SEO differs based on the keyword, the site, the age, trust and authority of the pages or collective pages within a website; the bottom line is, SEO requires a balance of the two.

Linkbuilding
Who is linking to you?
Now that your On-Page factors have been addressed, its time to turn our focus on who is linking to your site. More than any other Off-Page factors, your backlink profile has the power to move you up in the SERPs.
One Way Links
The Strongest Backlinks…
Are of course the hardest to acquire. In our example these would be one way links with closet design as the anchor text on their end. Once you have your list of websites that are linking to your competition, it’s time to contact them to try to negotiate a one way contextual link to your site. This is difficult because unlike reciprocal linking, the owners of the other site may ask “What’s in it for me”?
Negotiating one way links may take the form of trading services, or some kind of reciprocity other than you linking to them. If they insist on a two way linking agreement, take it. This is not as powerful as one way linking but reciprocal links still pass link juice to your site. You can barter or actually pay for a one way link with a one time or monthly fee. If the link could come from say California Closets which has a PR (page rank) of 5, it may very well be worth it as this link could move you up in the SERPs dramatically.
Reciprocal Links…
May not be as strong but they are certainly valuable. Be careful here as you don’t want to strike up a reciprocal linking agreement with any websites that are off-topic and outside of your niche. So in our example you would try to get links from construction companies, contactors, Interior designers, carpet companies, home cleaners etc. Avoid the reciprocal link request from a bowling ball manufacturer or a limousine service. Search engines can tell these are worthless to your readers. Make a special page for these reciprocal links and preface the page with language that assures your readers that these links are from websites you have vetted and you feel have the potential to really help them.
Article Marketing…
Is certainly one of the best ways to build backlinks. The process here starts with you writing articles using a journalistic style on subjects of interest to readers who would be searching within your language blueprint. In our example this could be;
5 Best Ways to Organize Your Closets
Closet Design That Saves Space
Where Exactly In The Closet Is That Sweater?
Can You Afford To Spend 20 Minutes Searching In Your Closet?
Spend 80% of your effort on your title and 20% on the article. Make sure you use your keywords in your title. Make your title short and compelling. The article needs to be keyword rich within limits.
The next step is to submit your articles to article directories like Ezines, Goarticles and Articlesbase. The article directories then send your articles to websites looking for this high quality content. When your article gets used, links to your site are in the footer. So every time one of your articles is picked up by a website, you are increasing the number of incoming high quality links from on-topic websites. This can dramatically improve your backlink profile. So if you like to write or you have someone in your company who likes to write, this is a very powerful linkbuilding strategy.
Blogging…
Is one of the strongest linkbuilding strategies. The search engines treat every blog post as a page, so if your competition has 650 pages chances are that many of those are blog posts. When you write a blog post you use the same On-Page practices like proper placement of your title tags and meta description tags that you used on regular web pages. With every blog post your are increasing your authority on the subject in the eyes of the search engines. This serves to push your site up in the rankings.
Your linking and Interlinking possibilities increase exponentially when you start to blog regularly. Like article writing, focus on your title and make sure it is keyword rich. Interlink where appropriate from your blog post to your landing pages and home page of your website. Using the “SHARE” button at the bottom of each post, set up profiles in the social media sites. Each time you write a post you will send it to Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Linkedin etc. This is one of the most enjoyable parts to promoting your site. I find that blog posts are easy to write because you are writing about your area of expertise and if your readers are getting value from the information you earn trust and linkjuice from the search engines.
Linkbuilding is a big subject but this is a “Thumbnail Course”. I could go on for another 50 pages. The important thing to remember is that there are many ways to build links. You will find some linkbuilding strategies more agreeable for you to do than others. Personally I like to blog more than I like article marketing so I focus on the blogging tool without forgetting the article marketing also.

Lead Generation and Sales
Search Engine Rankings
are not the end, they are the beginning.
High rankings won’t help you if your site is not set up to capture leads and increase sales. When a visitor comes to your site, your site needs to give them a good reason to leave their contact information easily or they won’t do it. A lead capture module needs to be above the fold on your home page or landing page so that visitors can easily put their name, email address and phone number in order to get what you are offering. In our example of closet design this could be a mini course about designing closets or a free closet design quote or consultation.
Here is an example of a good lead or sales capture module
Notice that visitors have two choices above the fold on the landing page
They can use the module to contact you for your offering but if the visitor doesn’t want to do that they are shown the Showrooms search bar. Closet design needs a lead capture module. However if you are selling a product you would use the same principals to guide the visitor to your sales page where they would have an opportunity to make a purchase.
Here is another example of a good lead capture module
Here you will notice the visitor is presented with three contact options. There is an 800 number, an email address as well as the module to enter contact information for a free in home consultation. The visitor is in control of the interaction between themselves and your company from the start.
Here is an example of a good sales capture module
The visitor is presented with the opportunity to purchase right up front. If they have to search around your site to find the page where they can purchase, they may give up and try another search result.
Split Test and Measure
Often you may have two versions you would like to try out to see which version gives you more leads/sales. Many companies use split testing to see which version converts better. We can show you how to measure your CTR (click through rate) for both versions and help you determine which version works best.
Close attention to lead and sales conversion rates will help you maximize your return on investment in SEO.

Part 6 Social Media Marketing
What is a social network?
When I talk about social networks, I am more accurately referring to social media networks, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Social media networks have grown faster than either radio or even television did in popularity. That’s why for marketers social media monitoring isn’t an option. It is a must! If you aren’t part of the conversation, your brand may be falsely represented or your competitors may be gaining an advantage over you. Be active in the conversation and at the very least be listening to it.
Why is a blog important to my business?
A blog is considered an asset because it is an opportunity to establish yourself as a thought leader, create a community around shared interests, encourage interactivity, create additional pages for your site and optimize for keywords. A blog should be updated regularly because the more often you publish, the more often the search engines will crawl your site and index your pages. All of this will contribute to you reaching the first page of organic search results.
Seven Reasons Businesses Must Be Social To Survive
Is it really important for your small business to be social?
1. Be Found
There was a time when marketing and advertising was one way outbound and only those with the largest budgets had the ability to spread their ideas and draw attention to their products and services. Today, getting found is a bit trickier like the popular children’s game “Find Waldo”. Creating a blog and sharing it via social media is one way to be found.
2. Stand Out
Once they know where you are, the key is to make sure you stand out from the crowd and don’t get lost. Whether you create a social presence yourself or outsource the task to a partner or an outside SEO/SEM specialist, staying engaged is no longer an option if you hope to stay prominent in the mind of new and old customers and clients.
3. Build Value
Of course, the best way to stand out is to build value (or brand, if you prefer) creating a reason people return to you again and again. Being social is a great way to create value even before a customer or client has decided to buy your products or engage your services. Sharing valuable information, supporting others and commenting on the information they share is a great way to build your brand. SEOServicesCompany.com can help guide you through the process of setting up profiles in the important social media sites.
4. Get Attention
Of course, what’s the good of creating great value if you can’t attract attention or if the attention you attract isn’t from the right target audience, those who can get a benefit from the value you have created. It’s important to learn how to draw attention to the content and value you create and to target the right audience no matter what social network you interact within.
5. Build Partnerships
Of course, being social is not just about finding a market for your product or service. It’s about building all kinds of advantageous business relationships that may at one time or another help you in your business. Success is not simply a question of sales but of nurturing the relationships that in one way or another can improve your business in terms of resources, partnerships and opportunities. Taken together, these qualities could be described as online marketing influence and participating in social media is the best way to build it.
6. SEO
Whether the social media platform you use passes search value directly to your website or not is a result of participation, it is certain that the visitors you attract including those who may use social media to search for their own content (see below) certainly will. Sharing your content or simply links to your site will encourage first visits and then inbound links from the very niche you are targeting and will surely eventually have a positive effect on your Search Engine Optimization.
7. Authority
Social media helps you gain authority for your content website and brand by letting you share it more widely and more quickly than you might ordinarily be able to simply by updating your blog regularly. Plus, social media makes it easy for others to share your content with their networks gradually building your authority in your niche.

Part 7 Conclusion
SEO Is Expensive?
Well, Of Course It Is!
Search Engine Optimization is very involved and difficult. If it was easy it would be cheap. As you have seen in this course there are a lot of items to address. To bring your website up out of the thousand and millions of websites to page 1 in Google is no mean feat. Everything has to be in alignment for search engine’s to place you in the top 10.
On-Page, Off-Page, site structure and navigation. Title tags, meta description tags, and keyword research. And then there is linkbuilding, interlinking, article marketing, blogging, social media marketing, etc etc. It’s a lot of work even with the first rate SEO tools that automate much of the tedious work for us.
Same as it ever was
I am 62 years old and I started my first business in 1983. It was expensive to be found and get leads then also. In the 1980s if you wanted to be in the commercial photography business you had to spend a minimum of $600 per month on your Yellow pages advertising. If you weren’t in the Yellow pages you were out of business. Added to that was the direct mail program that mailed out 25,000 pieces of direct mail for me each year was at least another $400 per month. So for this small one man photography business I was spending $12,000 per year to get leads. Actually this was perfect because my advertising was about 10% of my net profit which was $120,000.
It’s a good rule of thumb that you should plan on spending
10 to 15% of your adjusted net profit on advertising.
If you spend $12,000 on SEO you should be looking for $120,000 of additional business. This is a reasonable ROI on your investment in SEO. Our commitment to you is that we will bring your website up to page 1 of the search engines for your favorite keywords. As long as your CTR (click through rate) is healthy you should be getting more traffic, more conversions and thus more profit. If you are not we will work with you to make sure your website is a lead/sales generator.
What You Can Do If You Can’t Afford Us.
In this ever changing eco-system that is the Internet, there is always something you can do to market your site and improve your rankings.
I started a real estate business in 2002. I realized early on that with my reticent personality, I needed a steady supply of real estate buyers. These leads all had to come from the Internet because I wanted to work with buyers only. I didn’t want to take listings and I eschewed the traditional lead producing activities that have historically gone hand in hand with the real estate business. I wasn’t obsequious enough to be the usual glad hander going to parties or events to network and doing open houses to meet real estate buyers. So my website became my lead producer and it worked out great when I could afford to pay the SEO company. They were well worth the $1,000 per month as they kept my rankings in the search engines high enough to bring me 10 million dollars in sales. That’s a good living with a net of about $200,000 per year. I paid those $1,000 invoices with a smile on my face. Then came 2009 and my smile faded. The devastation in the housing industry was so crushing the floor fell out of my business and I couldn’t afford any more $1,000 payments.
My choices were, learn how to do my own SEO or get out of the real estate business. Being a tenacious sort I buckle down and studied. All day every day for 18 months I read every SEO texbook I could get my hands on. After a time I realized that I had to improve my backlink profile. There are many ways to do this so I picked my favorites, article marketing and blogging. The graph below shows 10 months but the effort was more like a 2 year program where I pretty much had quit my job as there was no real estate going on anyway.
I started with article marketing. I wrote 10 – 800 word articles and submitted them to article directories. These took 2 days to write and about 1 ½ days to submit to the directories for each article. Needless to say, this took a solid 6 months of full time work. I’m proud to tell you I achieved “Expert Author” status at Ezines, the biggest internet article directory.
Writing the articles was fun because it was like teaching but the submissions were extremely tedious and it was ruining too many days so I turned to blogging. Blogging is even more fun to do so I wrote 87 – 600 to 800 word blog articles and submitted them to 40 social media profiles like Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Digg. Delicious etc. etc. as well as the blog directories. This took a solid year of full time work but the submission proceedure only took 4 hours per post and I could tolerate that.
Writing the 60,000 words over the 2 year period created a better backlink profile as you can see on the graph. SEO is all about metrics. We are always measuring in order to make accurate assessments as to the impact of the linkbuilding stategies.
Not everyone can quit their job for 2 years to work on their backlinking profile. If the real estate business had stayed healthy I never would have done these things. Necessity is the mother of invention they say. I was convinced that real estate would recover and in the meantime I could increase my share of a decreasing number of leads.
What SEO Services Company Does:
