SEO-SEM Is Rife With Sociopaths
Looking To Make Some Easy Money

In most industries the bad apples often get more publicity than the folks that do business by the book which can give any industry a bad name.  The Search Engine Marketing industry is no different.  Back in 2004 I decided that I wanted Internet leads for my real estate business. They say a sucker is born every minute. Buying SEO Services was very stressful for me because I didn’t know how to tell if someone was lying to me on the phone, which is the only way most buyers engage with whoever is contracted to help them with their SEO.

I purchased SEO from several companies when I was in the real estate business. One time I was on the phone with a very convincing rip off artist. He was so convincing on the phone that I thought I was using my best intuition by giving the company a chance. I agreed to send him $500 in exchange for his bringing my 3 best keywords up to page 1 in the search engines. The company which has long been shut down by the authorities, gave me 3 references. Doing my due diligence I made sure I spoke to all 3 buyers.

All 3 buyers raved about the company, going on and on
about how they are on page 1 for their bulls eye keywords.

Buying SEO-SEM is scary business because its not just the money, its the 6 weeks you loose waiting for the terms to come up. When it finally dawned on me that in this case my rankings for my 3 terms hadn’t budged at all after the usual 4 to 6 week waiting period, I was incensed. Not only did I loose the money, now I had to find another SEO company, pay more money and wait another 6 weeks to find out if they were BS artists also. All this when I needed the leads desperately. What a bummer!

I have been in one business or another for the last 30 years and  I have learned a thing or two about how to get problems resolved.  In fact, lawyers work really well, but often times the average business owner does not have the financial means to hire a lawyer which is why ethically challenged companies can get away with ripping people off. I am going to share a few places where you can file a complaint that will either get the business owners attention, or get results.

The Better Business Bureau.

I have mixed feelings about the Better Business Bureau (BBB) because their business model might lead one to believe that they favor the companies that pay them for their listings. Nonetheless, if you lodge a complaint with the BBB, they will make note of it as well as the outcome of your case on the businesses BBB profile. In this case I filed a report that they told me they would put with the other 12 complaints. Now I felt like a jerk because I hadn’t checked with the BBB in the first place.

The Attorney General

The Attorney General has lots of authority in a state, so a business owner does not want to be on their bad side. That being said, if you feel you were wronged by a company, you can always file a complaint with the Attorney General for the state in which they operate.

Google

Yes, you can complain to Google in some cases. Specifically, if you are working with a Google AdWords Certified Company, Google will hear your complaint.  All you have to do is find the company’s Partner Profile on Google and select the link at the bottom of the page that says “Report a complaint about this partner.” Often, a Google AdWords Certified Company will link directly to their profile. If they do not, that might give you reason to question whether or not they have a valid partner status. If they have lied to you, that’s just more fuel for your claim.

Take Them to Court

I learned one thing years ago; in America you can sue anyone for anything. This is where documentation is key. The company may have an agreement where you agreed to pay them, but you also have documentation where they agreed to do work for you. If you can prove that it was not done, then you might have a strong case.

Threaten To Sue

Write the company a letter (or email) and let them know your intentions, they may take you a bit more seriously. No company wants to be involved in a lawsuit or negative publicity, so even if they are unethical, they will want to fly under the radar.  I also say, never make an idle threat. If you tell them you are going to take action, give them a deadline, and then take action. It does not take that much time to write a letter to a consumer protection agency such as the ones I mentioned.

Finally, call the references back and tell them that the company they raved about ripped you off. I did and they were all so sorry, because they certainly didn’t intentionally mislead me. Maybe the SEO company did a good job with their keywords. Maybe their keywords were slam dunk easy like “Hypersphere Portal Development” or something like that.

Another valuable tool to use that I didn’t think of at the time is enter “SEO Company Name Scam” into Google. There may be a list of dissatisfied customers who have written blog posts about the company.

Here at SEO Services Company we have a “No Questions Asked Money Back Guarantee” and its for real. If your terms are coming up in the rankings but you feel you have not gotten your moneys worth at that point in time, we will work a month or several months without sending you an invoice until you are satisfied! We will also send upon request our successful SEO efforts. We don’t publish them for some very good reasons but they are available in a PDF we can send you.

The above problem runs throughout the SEO-SEM industry. For this reason, when you enter “Seo Services” into a search, most SEO companies feature their guarantee along with samples and testimonials right up front on their home page. Most SEO companies are painfully aware that abuses are occurring daily in this new industry.

Here at SEO Services Company we don’t just improve
your position in search engines.

We help you with your entire Internet Marketing strategy.

Its Our Job To Not Let Them

Let me tell you what I mean. For testing Search Engine Optimization, I like to search for “Black Handbags” on Google. That produces 95 ,000,000 results in .14 seconds. Of the 95 million results how do they figure out who gets into the top ten? Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the cut is about .0000001 %

SEOS Black Handbags

Here is my understanding about how it works; Keep in mind, I’m just guessing  at the numbers, they are hypothetical but you will get the idea, I think. Of the 95,000,000 search results, how many have the correct On Page Optimization? This means that the title tags have the term “Black Handbags” in them, “Black Handbags” is in an H1 tag and the text is written in a keyword rich fashion with secondary and tertiary keywords that are semantically related and support the main keyword sprinkled throughout the page in H2 and H3 tags. This also means that “Black Handbags” is in the keywords and meta descriptions for the page as well as keywords, tags and meta descriptions in any linked blog posts about “Black Handbags”

I know this might seem radical
but I think that brings us down to about 2,000 websites

How many of the 2,000 websites have a healthy, diversified, backlinking profile? This means links from a lot of different sources and plenty of them. These would be from vendors, competitors, social media sites etc. The higher the PR (page rank), the better.

That brings us down to about 1,000 websites

How many have participated in Social Media Marketing in a “limited to whats convenient” way?

That brings us down to about 500 websites

How many of the remaining 500 websites have really immersed themselves into a full social media presence along with regular blogging, blog commenting, social bookmarking, profiles on Linkedin groups, Facebook business page etc.?

That brings us down to about 200 websites.

Of the 200 websites, how many have aged domain names that will not expire for several years?

That brings us down to about 100 websites.

Of the remaining 100 websites, how many link out to helpful “Black Handbags” related content on other sites?

That brings us to maybe 50 websites.

Of the remaining 50 websites, how many are listed in the mission critical directories like DMOZ and the Yahoo Directory? How many have links from .edu and.gov authoritative high PR (page rank) websites?

Here is where we get down to the 10 best “Black Handbags”
websites for the search engine’s users.

If you are trying to sell black handbags, you have dozens of roadblocks
to get by for your website to get on that first page.

Search Engines Are Trying To Bury Your Website

Amber Mac’s Keynote at SES Toronto 2011 could have been renamedHow to Avoid Weinergate” in light of the recent social media scandal named after, um, Weiner’s weiner. The themes of her presentation concerned best practices and reputation management. Also, the importance of authenticity and focusing on on how to plan a corporate social media marketing strategy were stressed along with guidance about avoiding a social media PR disaster.

Below is an outline of some of the key takeaways from her presentation.

Have a Social Media Policy

Social media sites have a home in today’s workplace, but each company needs to develop its own rules for its employees about how and when social media should be used at work. I think it best to have one employee or owner who’s job is to ponder all social media interaction for the company. This person doesn’t have to write it all but they should read it and maybe sign off on the effort in order to monitor whats is coming from the company and into social media.

No one will want to write the policy so try Policy Tool, a free web-based policy generator that will write your company’s policy based on a 12-question survey. You can customize it from there. If that seems ineffective, try making a video privacy policy.

Be Authentic

You don’t have to hire an actor to appear in your marketing videos. Let the company speak for itself. I think that really hearing from the employees adds immeasurably to the appeal of marketing videos about the companies products and services. Hearing from people who are involved in the day to day have that ordinary person appeal that viewers find disarming. I think its much harder to stop a video of an ordinary person. It somehow seems like bad manners. Conversely, a professional speaker reading from a script is easy to turn off.

Be Original

Amber cited a number of original online marketing campaigns. Among them were Charmin’s support of Sit or Squat, an app that locates and assesses the quality of public restrooms so you always know where to go to go, Footlocker’s Sneakerpedia, an online authority on the athletic shoe history, and Ben & Jerry’s Fair Tweets app, which adds messages to the ends of users tweets in support of Fair Trade.

Avoid Social Media Done Wrong

Dave Carroll’s viral “United Breaks Guitars” video has attracted over 10 million views on YouTube. Amber cited a recent study that concluded United Airlines had lost 180 million dollars and 10 percent of their share price as a result of the damage to their reputation. That’s enough to have bought Dave 80,000 of the Taylor guitars that United refused to replace.

Assess your Associations on the Web

Use Wefollow and Klout to assess the digital influence of the businesses and individuals you are building relationships with online. Remember, influence scores only tell you so much. You’ll need to do some research to discover whether someone’s influential message is one you want your brand associated with.

Keep up on Trends: What’s Hot This Year on the Web?

  • Group buying: Groupon and others have become the fastest growing web sector. Watch out for Uforce, a reverse Groupon business model that allows customers to band together and propose bulk buying to businesses in return for discounts.
  • Quora is a crowdsourcing question and answer resource that’s gaining traction. Your brand’s presence could position it as an authority on topics related to your products.
  • Qwiki is a popular resource that gathers information for a search term and assembles it into a multimedia presentation accompanied by a spoken narrative. It’s a good resource for building infographics. Amber said she is addicted to exploring the different data visualizations.

Key Social Media Statistics

Here are some stats from the presentation that caught my eye:

  • 66 percent of women don’t check in with Foursquare due to the “creepiness factor.” Simply put, many women don’t want to constantly publicize where they are out of concern for their safety. This will definitely be something to consider if you’re trying to find appropriate social channels for a brand with a largely female customer base.
  • 35 percent of people use mobile applications before they get out of bed in the morning. No word yet as to how many of those applications are alarm clocks.
  • On Facebook, only 10 percent of people engaged with a brand will interact with the brand page. Ninety percent of engagement happens in the news feeds. Success depends on your use of “the blank box,” so keep up with your updates!

Recommended Tools

Here are some of the tools mentioned that will help you manage your Social Resources.

  • Facebook Insights is the best option for free Facebook monitoring
  • For monitoring all of your social media resources, she spoke about Radian 6 as the paid tool she uses.
  • For a social media dashboard, she recommended Hootsuite.

Look For Reasons And Opportunities To Link Out

Google doesn’t talk about their link-based algorithms very much (other than to say that they use more than 400 ranking factors), but by looking at correlation data, reading patents and white papers, and other forms of research, it’s possible to roughly work out a lot of what they’re doing.

SEOS google factors

The idea of examining trust through links was first introduced by Yahoo, and it is now believed that Google uses this as well. The principle works by marking certain seed sites as 100 percent trusted, and working out how many link jumps away from one of those seeds your own site is: the further away you are, the lower the trust. They use your own outgoing and incoming links in this calculation. Spammers don’t link out to non-spam sites much! So, that’s one instant algorithmic benefit to linking out to good quality sites.

Remember that the Google mission statement for organic rankings revolves around Meritocracy. It would make perfect sense to me that, as with regular site updates, Google also gives sites a bonus purely for the act of linking out. While they aren’t looking for “good net citizens” necessarily they are looking for sites that will be most useful for their own users. I think that sites that link out frequently to other relevant sites like I just did to help with the word meritocracy are deemed to be more useful by Google’s all seeing eye than those that don’t link out at all.

SEOS Interlinking graphic

How to Go About Linking Out

Just as you wouldn’t want links to your own site stuffed away in some links page no one ever looks at, linking out doesn’t mean going and creating a big list of links and putting them in some quiet corner of your site. It means linking out regularly from your core content. This can be a link to an additional vendor they might need to enhance their efforts.

Blogging, or otherwise regularly updating your site,
is key to the success of any small business SEO campaign

For each piece of content you add to your site, make sure you add at least one relevant, good quality outbound link.  I also think that its a good idea to create links to older posts or other internal content.

It also pays to have a strategy for selecting outgoing link targets. You can search Google for targets to link out to but I think its a better idea to just use your intuition as you write. For instance I often refer to the Google Adwords Keyword Tool at points in the article where my reader may want to go there.

Make sure this outbound link is relevant for your own visitors. Your outbound link should always go out to highly trusted, high authority, non-spammy websites. It goes without saying, your own content has to be great.

Lastly, linking out to bloggers is always a great idea. Blog software that supports interlinking such as WordPress trackbacks, will usually give authors a notification when someone links to them (unlike other sites, where you have to go through your web stats to find incoming links), and bloggers are far more likely to link out in return.

When the nice people from AJ Crate Covers came to us we advised them to go after local search first. This brand new company had an idea for dog crate covers that they thought might catch on. We felt confident that we could increase their traffic quickly so that they could gauge the market. Local Search Optimization is the easiest and quickest way to get to page one in the search engines with the caveat that the keyword “dog crate covers” needs to have a qualifier like “dog crate covers NH” or “dog crate covers 03103″

After a couple of weeks we got “dog crate covers” up to number 11 when
accessing the national data centers using no local qualifiers

Local SERP

Using the localized qualifier two weeks after signing up for
LOCAL DIRECTORIES
allowed AJ Dog Crate Covers to dominate local searches

Dog crate local SERP

After 6 weeks AJ is still dominating local searches and comes up at number 4 in the national search. Notice I changed my search location to Topeka Kansas to avoid being localized by the search engine. Localization will occur if you use the same computer and the search criteria is set for your region. Something the search engines do for you automatically. They are just trying to help but if we want to check our keyword positioning in the data centers around the country, its a must that you change this setting to anywhere way outside of your area.

Dog Crate Cover SERP

First page rankings can be very easy sometimes. At other times it tries my patience, depending largely on the keyword(s). Our first conversation with clients begins with keywords which create the language blueprint for the site. If the keywords are very competitive we change strategies accordingly and may have to be a bit more patient. SEO Services Company observes best practices and participates exclusively in “white hat” techniques so that nothing we do will come back to haunt you.

BLOG  =  Better Listings On Google

First of all let me just say that although these are very good for your SEO efforts, some are paid directories. I placed the cost at the end of the listing in green to make calculation easier. If you signed up for all the total would be $400 initially and then annual fees.

Social Media Is Being Integrated Into Search Results

Instead of separating search engine results pages (SERPs) results from social networks like Twitter and Facebook from organic results, both Google and Bing are streamlining search engine results pages (SERPs) by combining organic results with this social content. Both Google and Bing have announced that, for some searches, social content will boost the rankings of results higher on the SERP than regular results. These announcements are just further confirmation of the convergence of social and search, and signal the growing importance of social media marketing for businesses.

Google’s Evolution: Twitter Integration

Google’s SERPs have progressed, instead of just showing organic results as a website link, or to a specific tweet from a user within your social circle who mentions a link. Now you will see a combination of the two: the website result, a link to the friend’s social network profile (e.g. Twitter account) who did the sharing, and a link to the original recommendation combined into one result. The website result, with annotations linking to your friend’s profile and a time stamp that redirects to the original recommendation are all combined in one result.

Facebook Using Bing Search Results

Another development of note is coming from Facebook, which has started providing Bing’s web results as a part of their internal search feature. Bing has primarily focused on the integration of Facebook “Like” data in their SERPs and algorithm. Their social search features have evolved to a module within SERPs that’s set apart from the organic search results with the header, “Liked by your Facebook friends,” to listing organic results with an added social annotation mentioning friends from your Facebook network who have also “Liked” the URL. Judging from Facebook’s and Bing’s partnership, it would seem to be just a matter of time before Twitter starts using Google search results.

As the lines of SEO and Social Media continue to converge, it’s becoming very clear that getting a page to rank highly in the search engines takes a combination of Search Engine Optimization and Social Media Marketing. So what does the Social Media Marketer need to know about SEO in order to make their social campaigns help with search rankings? At least as much as the SEO needs to know about Social Media Marketing to help their search engine optimization efforts

In the SEO world, links are like currency, the larger the bill (more authority), the more powerful it is.  So for a long time, most SEOs blew off links from social sites like Twitter and Facebook since they didn’t have much direct SEO value because the links are almost always nofollowed. Now that we know that Google and Bing use Twitter and Facebook to influence regular search results, it’s time to start thinking about how SEO and Social Media Marketing are beginning to be two sides of the same coin.

When it comes to Search Engine Optimization,
Your internal links are more important than your backlinks.

Working in Search Engine Optimization, there is so much emphasis put on
“Who is linking to you” as being the price of admission for higher rankings. Our customers get thousands of incoming links either from working with us here at  SEO Services Company or through their own link building efforts. These backlinks can come from many different places. They could be from article submissions, a blog, social media, vendors, reciprocal links, professional memberships, videos on YouTube etc. These backlinks build up and they are the driving force that improve your rankings in the Meritocracy of the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

Internal Linking Diagram

Every website that wants to rank in the search engines needs to have a link building campaign going on non-stop. Its an endless job. Many site owners who really need leads/sales coming from their website will vend out their linkbuilding as it is very tedious and not an easy thing to do even if you know what you are doing. Once this linkbuilding starts and the effort has some momentum most website owners will relax a bit, especially if they have experts like us creating the backlinks for them.

Internal links are not about who is linking to you
Its about how your pages are linking to each other.

Its easy to forget how very powerful these internal links are. Like I’ve said before, if you don’t link to it why should Google link to it?  These links are how Google finds all your pages. Picture your websites internal links as a circulatory system going throughout the site. First decide which pages that your would like to see ranking in the SERPs. Then look objectively at the content of those pages to make sure they are worthy of ranking based on the quality and usefulness of the page. Once these things are done its time to create some inbound links to your landing page from you own site.

For example, lets say you have a page about electronic dog collars and you would like to drive more traffic to it. You need three kinds of links for that page. Firstly the page needs backlinks as discussed that are always increasing. Secondly, the page needs links leaving the page. These links can send the reader for more information on or off your site, like what I did with the word meritocracy above. The third kind of links are internal links. These are the most important. These get the least amount of attention, maybe because they require the true labor of thought before you put them in place.

The placement of your internal links takes thought and planning. Go through your other pages and see if there is any content where you refer to dog collars, electronics, dog training or any other contextual spot where the reader could benefit from a link to the electronic dog collar page. Make sure the contextual link reads “Electronic Dog Collars”. Make sure the link is placed in a spot where it will really benefit the reader to be shown the electronic dog collar page. Always open in a new window. Make it natural, it should not be off-topic or look contrived. If you try it and it doesn’t read well drop the link and look for another place to appropriately link to the electronic dog collar page.

A good way to spend some down time would be to
noodle around your site looking for linking opportunities

The algorithms in the search engines are getting so sophisticated that if you link to your dog collar page from the middle of a paragraph about tent supplies, Google will know. Their algorithm is getting to become an incredibly astute BS detector. No one is smart enough to play them for any length of time. So write for your readers and set up your internal linking to make sense while keeping an eye on how the search engine spiders spiders (which are text readers essentially) are reading all your pages.

More Than Just a Quick Blog Post

Most small business owners don’t start a business blog just for fun. It is fun to create blog posts but we are here to make money with this. When I was in the real estate business, SEO experts started telling me that I should have a blog. Creating a blog sounded like a complete waste of time. I put off creating my WordPress install but once I got started I was hooked. Then I figured out that every post actually gets counted by Google as a page and that if I optimized that post I could get it to rank for my keywords. Additionally those optimized blog posts/pages have the power to move my category pages and home page up in the organic rankings.

So Now Blogging Is My Favorite SEO Technique

Like so many things in the economic system that is the internet, the more quality content you offer your readers  the more generous the search engines will be with your rankings and the more money you will make. But quality content is a given, don’t even start a post unless you have something valuable to offer. Quality of content isn’t enough for the post to bring you SEO benefits. The blog posts themselves need the same On-Page Optimization that you put into all the other pages on your site. Don’t treat it like a  tweet, no one will want to read it and it will not help your SEO.

Checklist For Blog Post On-Page Optimization

  • Make sure your title is short, compelling and contains your keyword(s)
  • Pay close attention to your title tags which should contain your keyword(s)
  • Look for an image that helps get your point across. Put your keyword(s) in your alt tags
  • Write the post for your readers while using your keyword(s) in a natural way
  • Try to work secondary and tertiary semantically related keywords into the post
  • Reread and edit, try to include search friendly language for your niche
  • Write a unique meta description tag for each post, again include your keyword(s)
  • Keep the post somewhere between 500 and 800 words
  • Invite comments

    Don’t Use an H1 tag

I make a big deal out of this because, at least with WordPress your post title automatically gets put into H1 tags. Here is the automatically produced  HTML for one of my posts:

<h1 class=”entry-title”>Why a WordPress Based Website is So Desirable</h1>

If you add another H1 tag to the text body you are running the risk of Google pushing down on your page because they insist on only one H1 tag. The H1 tag is very important and is meant to define the main thrust of the post. You can have as many H2 and H3 tags as you like but the H1 is bad for your SEO if you use more than one. Once you have entered your title, your keyword(s) are automatically in H1 tags.

Note: Mission critical, for regular pages don’t forget to add your H1 manually!

Link To Your Post

The search engines look at it this way, if you won’t bother to link to your content , why would they? Whether you link to it through another post or another page, make sure to link to it or it will be invisible to the search engines. It can be linked to through a list of related posts at the bottom of the page or through a reference to the subject while writing another article. The search engine spiders will follow the link, find and index the page. If you don’t link to it , it can never rank or help your other pages rank.

Syndicate Via Social Channels

Syndicate your blog post externally by sharing it across the spectrum of social networks like Twitter, Linkedin and Facebook.  This can be done with the share button that should be at the bottom of each published post. This can eat up some serious time and its very tedious. Submitting each blog to 50 different social profiles can take 3 or 4 hours Ughh! Lately I have been using Onlywire and I’m much happier. I’m done in 10 minutes.

In Summary

Writing really useful information and optimizing your blog post rigorously means you will probably spend much more time per post than casual bloggers. The payoff however becomes evident when you see your blog post pop up in the SERPs (search engine results pages) ready to bring traffic to your site.

Take Charge of Your SEO Services With Frequent Blogging

I think that the best SEO strategy for blogging is…

…..to think of your blog post as adding a page to your site that could stand on its own in the navigation. This is one of the most powerful search engine optimization techniques. Build your article like a page all the way from title tags, meta description, tags, keywords and footer. The post may very well rank for your keywords all on it’s own. Of course there has to be information worth reading in between but that’s the real work, always has been.

One of the best books I read on creating SEO friendly content…

….. was “Content Rich” by John Wuebben. This guy really inspired me to either write something that helps buyers or go away from the keyboard until a valuable idea drops into my head.

Blogs provide businesses an excellent opportunity…

…..to add fresh content to their websites on a regular basis. Search engines love to crawl websites that offer users regularly updated content. If you are consistent with this aspect of your internet marketing, your new content will bring search engine spiders to your website frequently and your site will get more crawls. If you choose your keywords carefully, blogging can bring a huge amount of traffic to your website.

Blogging is a low cost marketing device…

…..with a quality blog you can instantly inform your customers of the recently launched products and services much before you think to promote them through other media channels. With an easy to use automated blogging software like WordPress (strongly preferred), you don’t need a web designer managing the technical aspects. You can easily publish the posts all by yourself. Here you are creating your own SEO services unassisted. Blogs happen to be one of the best examples of Content Management Systems (CMS). You can easily upload a video file, image, audio file, document or PDF file with a few clicks of your mouse.

In addition to generating media and public relations…

….. regular blogging can help you manage your online reputation. If you are facing any kind of negative press, you can counter it with the help of a blog. Blogging is a great way to stay ahead of your competitors, especially if you are in a very competitive niche. A blog helps you inform your customers of the way you work and how you compare favorably with your competitors.

A blog can bring you amazing results…

…..when you distribute your posts to social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Myspace, as well as social bookmarking websites like StumbleUpon and Digg. If a single blog post goes viral on these sites you can get a surge of new visitors to your site in addition to creating  a number of quality inbound links.
